As a jeweler, I spend every day helping clients make smart, informed decisions when purchasing diamonds and fine jewelry. That raises an interesting question: How do I spend my own money when buying diamond jewelry?

I recently purchased a diamond necklace for my wife, and the process reminded me that I evaluate jewelry for myself the same way I evaluate it for my clients.

Before buying a piece, I look closely at four things: diamond quality, diamond matching, construction and design, and overall value. If a piece does not meet all four standards, I do not buy it.

1. Are the Diamonds Cut Well?

The first thing I evaluate is the quality of the diamond cutting.

When I examined the necklace I purchased, I wanted every diamond to have enough life and brilliance to stand out, despite the relatively small size of the individual stones.

2. Do All the Diamonds Match?

In a diamond necklace, bracelet, band or any other piece containing a continuous row of stones, evaluating each diamond individually is not enough. The diamonds must also look consistent when placed next to one another.

Jewelers often refer to well-matched stones as calibrated diamonds. This means the diamonds have been carefully selected to match in characteristics such as:

Shape
Color
Cut
Overall appearance

The goal is for the diamonds to look like peas in a pod. One stone should not appear noticeably larger, darker, brighter or differently shaped than the stones surrounding it.

Think of soldiers marching in a perfectly organized row. When the diamonds are properly calibrated, your eye sees one continuous line of brilliance rather than a collection of mismatched stones.

3. Is the Metal Strong Without Looking Bulky?

Next, I inspect what I call the “health” of the metal.

A piece of fine jewelry must contain enough metal to withstand regular wear, securely hold its diamonds and maintain its structure over time. At the same time, it should still look elegant and refined.

There is a delicate balance.

If the setting is too heavy, the jewelry may appear bulky or distract from the diamonds. If it is made too thin, it may bend, break or fail to protect the stones properly.

When evaluating a diamond necklace, bracelet or ring, I look closely at the settings, links, prongs, clasps and connection points. These components should feel secure and substantial without overpowering the design.

4. Will the Person Actually Want to Wear It?

Technical quality only matters when the design is right for the person receiving the jewelry.

Before purchasing the necklace, I considered whether the style was something my wife would genuinely enjoy wearing. After nearly 20 years of marriage, I feel like I am beginning to understand her taste.

When choosing diamond jewelry for someone else, think about what they already wear.

Do they prefer yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum? Do they gravitate toward subtle everyday pieces or bolder statement jewelry? Is their style classic, modern, vintage-inspired or highly distinctive?

5. Does the Price Represent Good Value?

Finally, I consider value.

Value does not always mean finding the lowest price. It means determining whether the quality, materials, craftsmanship and design justify what the piece costs.

I ask myself several questions:

Are the diamonds well cut?
Are the stones properly matched?
Is the setting strong and well constructed?
Is the design something my wife will wear?
Does the price make sense for the finished piece?

When all of those elements align, I can feel confident that the piece will hold its value and the purchase represents money well spent.
