Are diamond salespeople trying to take advantage of buyers?

· · Original on Reddit

Well, first of all, not every salesperson is going to "take advantage" of you. Of course, they're motivated to do business, but there's nothing nefarious about that. Remember, you're going to be spending money on a diamond no matter what. So you're not deciding WHETHER to spend money - just WHERE.

That said, I'd take a trip down there with no intention to buy. Leave your credit cards at home if it helps! And try to make a few appointments in advance so dealers can properly prepare for you. That way they can put together stones that will be of interest and not just scramble to show you whatever they have on hand.

How long does a custom ring take to make?

· · Original on Reddit

It depends on the company, and the type of ring. Actually manufacturing a custom ring takes about 2-3 weeks, once the center stone is selected and the design is finalized. Those steps can take a few weeks as well.

I generally advise clients to make an appointment 6-8 weeks before they want to have a ring in hand, if possible. If you have less time than that, we can go faster, but you have to be ready to make quicker decisions.

Is it normal to feel stressed buying an engagement ring?

· · Original on Reddit

It's complicated. On one hand, it's a symbol of your commitment, so it should be something you're proud of. On the other hand, she'll be wearing it every day for the rest of her life, so she should feel great about it.

Married life is filled with FAR more difficult situations than this. Buying an engagement ring should be fun. Yes, it's a lot of money, so there is inherent stress, but at the end of the day, you should be happy to do it. If you don't feel happy to do it, don't. Give it a little time and see what happens. You may feel very differently in just a few days or weeks.
